Sinhala Pronunciation Guide

Notes:

• Words most commonly used in speech have been used in stead of highly formal words which are not used in day-to-day converstions.
• When the spelling is identical to the English word, it should be pronounced as the English word.
• For other words use the following guide.
• No full stops have been used. All "." Signs at the end of words have been used to explain the sound.
• Each new word starts with a capital letter.

Equivalents of Sinhala Vowels:

a	'u' in sum, but, cut; first 'a' in mama
a.	'a' in general, formal, vital, principal, royal
a-	'a' in father
ae	'a' in cat, bat, fax
ae-	'a' in jam, van
i	'i' in ink, big
ee	'ee' in meet, jeep, wheel
u	'u' in put
oo	'oo' in boot, choose , smooth
e	'e' in egg, men, wet
e-	'ey' in they, obey
o	'o' in obey, oblique
o-	'o' in royal, long, more
